What is the advantage gained in Baseball by having a left handed pitcher or hitter?
Ive often heard of managers using lefthanded pitchers against certain hitters and vice versa. What exactly is the advantage for either a left handed hitter or pitcher in their respective positions?
A left handed hitter has an advantage when facing a right handed pitcher because most of the right handed pitcher’s breaking pitches will break toward the left handed hitter and away from a right handed hitter. It is generally easier to hit a pitch coming in towards you than one that is tailing away from you.
A left handed pitcher will often be called in from the bullpen to face a quality left handed hitter so that his pitches are breaking away from the left handed hitter. Similarly, a left handed pitcher may be selected to start a game if the other team’s starting lineup has a significant number of strong lefthanded hitters.
In addition to the direction of breaking pitches, it is somewhat easier to see a pitch thrown from the opposite side than one thrown from the same side as you are standing.
Also, when the pitch is thrown from the same side (i.e., a right hander to a right hander or a left hander to a left hander), an inside pitch may at first appear to be close to hitting you before it breaks over the plate.
